Why Private Equity Is Getting Faster Than Founders

Why Private Equity Is Getting Faster Than Founders

Most founders still think private equity wins because of capital, More money, better access, bigger deals.

That used to be true….It’s not the same advantage anymore.

The real shift is happening somewhere else. Private equity firms are getting faster.

The playbook is no longer the advantage

For years, firms relied on playbooks.

Improve pricing, cut costs and optimize operations. The ideas weren’t new.

The advantage came from applying them consistently, but something has changed.

Those playbooks are no longer static and they’ve been turned into systems.

Execution is becoming a machine

The firms pulling ahead aren’t better at strategy, they’re better at execution but not in the traditional sense.

In a structural sense.

Instead of relying on periodic reviews and manual oversight, they are building systems that:

  • Track initiatives in real time

  • Tie activity directly to EBITDA

  • Surface underperformance automatically

  • Push decisions faster across the organization

Execution is no longer dependent on individuals. It’s embedded in the system itself.

The shift founders don’t see

Most founder-led businesses still operate the old way. Ideas are discussed, plans are made and execution happens unevenly.

But progress depends on, who’s paying attention, who’s driving it and how involved the founder is. That works but it doesn’t scale.

And it doesn’t compete with a system that is constantly pushing execution forward.

Speed is becoming the advantage

What’s changed isn’t intelligence…It’s velocity.

Private equity firms don’t necessarily have better ideas than founders.

But they implement faster.

  • They don’t wait for perfect plans.

  • They don’t pause for alignment.

  • They don’t rely on one person to push things forward.

They move and that movement compounds.

Why this matters now

The environment has changed and multiple expansion is less reliable. Markets are less forgiving and capital is more disciplined.

Which means value creation is no longer optional, It’s required.

And the firms that can execute quickly and consistently have an advantage that didn’t matter as much before.

The Off-the-Org-Chart Perspective

The takeaway isn’t that founders need better ideas.

It’s that they need better execution structures.

Because at a certain level, the difference between companies isn’t what they plan to do.

It’s how quickly those plans turn into outcomes.

And the businesses that win aren’t the ones with the best strategy.

They’re the ones where execution doesn’t depend on the founder to happen.

P.S. One quick transition note…

Starting this Wednesday, these emails will come from Off the Org Chart instead of Roland’s Riff.

You’ve already been seeing that perspective at the end of these emails.

Now it just becomes the main focus. Nothing else changes.

Same ideas. Same thinking.

Just a better reflection of what this has really been about.

So if you see Off the Org Chart in your inbox, it’s still me.
