Regent’s “Pocket-Light” No Money Out Of Pocket Business Acquisitions Strategy
New Year’s Edition: “Making Money Appear Out of Thin Air!”
Greetings, Creative Investing Aficionados! Ready for some business magic that might even make Albus Dumbledore scratch his beard in amazement.
We’re taking a peek at Regent, a private equity firm that’s been sniffing out distressed businesses like white Italian truffles. And, it’s been acquiring these treasures at yard sale prices and paying with promises and a firm handshake!
🔍 Case in Point: The Cheddar Chase!
Imagine launching a business, selling it for $200 million, and then watching it flounder like a fish out of water. That’s the saga of Cheddar, once dubbed the “CNBC for the Snapchat Generation.”
Regent swooped in, not with a pile of cash, but with a no money out-of-pocket deal and snapped up the deal. They’ll have their work cut out for them to turn the business around, but grabbing a giant slice of a business formerly valued at $200 million without putting out any cheddar of their own is a big and smart win for Regent.
🧐 The Art of Buying Without Buying
Regent’s been playing this game all year. They’ve been collecting businesses that were once the talk of the town and that sold for hundreds of millions in cash not that long ago, only they’ve been paying with IOUs.
From an online learning venture to fashionista finds site, Zulily, Regent’s been on a shopping spree without the pesky inconvenience of spending any actual money.
📉 The Zulily Zinger
Let’s talk about Zulily. Once a jewel in the e-commerce crown, it found itself in a bit of a pickle, with sales dropping almost as fast as its valuation.
Regent acquired it and almost as quickly announced its closure. “Maximizing value for creditors” they called it. We think it’s more akin to one of those 80’s buy and breakup liquidation deals.
But before you judge Regent too harshly remember that you can make a LOT of money buying undervalued companies whose assets are worth way more if you sell them off than the market values the company commands as a going concern.
📢 Regent’s Modus Operandi
Regent’s website boasts about transforming businesses with innovation and operational efficiency. That’s fancy talk for “We buy insanely low (preferably without cash) and sell much higher.” It’s basically Wall Street’s version of flipping houses, only the profits are many multiples higher.
🚀 Looking Ahead: More Deals in the Pipeline!
With interest rates high and capital and credit tighter than they’ve been in decades, the business world is brimming with companies who are out of runway and out of options. Regent’s deal flow looks strong and they’re worth watching to see how the no money pocket game is played in the big leagues.
